When homeowners plan a new fence, the gate usually comes last. It shows up as a line item on the quote, gets picked almost as an afterthought, and then gets used every single day for the next decade. The Gate Is the Hardest Working Part of Your Fence

A fence panel is passive. Once it's set between two posts, it doesn't move. A gate is a mechanical assembly that swings open and closed thousands of times a year, carries its own weight, and takes lateral force every time someone pushes it or lets it blow in the wind. The stress on a gate is fundamentally different from the stress on a fence panel, which is why gates wear out or shift long before the rest of the fence does.

Why Wood Gates Need a Diagonal Brace

Any walk gate built from wood needs a diagonal brace running from the bottom hinge corner to the top latch corner. This brace transfers the load from the heavy latch side back down to the hinge, where the gate is anchored to the post. Without it, gravity pulls the latch corner down over time, the gate racks out of square, and it stops latching or dragging on the ground.

The direction matters. The brace should run from the bottom hinge corner up to the top latch corner. That's the direction that resists the sag. A brace running the other way resists nothing and can make the problem worse. On a properly built gate you'll see this diagonal on the inside face, and it should be a structural member, not just a decorative trim board.

Gate Posts Are Not the Same as Line Posts

Gate posts take more stress than the posts holding your fence panels. A line post holds a panel that never moves. A gate post holds a swinging assembly that puts torque on it every time the gate opens or closes. Gate posts need to be larger in diameter and set deeper in concrete than standard line posts.

On wood fence installs, gate posts are typically a larger dimension lumber than the 4x4 used on the fence line. On steel or aluminum systems, the gate posts are a heavier gauge or larger diameter section. Cutting corners here is one of the most common reasons gates start leaning within a few years.

Think About Swing Direction Before the Install

Which way the gate swings affects how useful it is every day. A gate that swings inward into the yard is typically more practical and safer, but a gate on a slope may need to swing in a specific direction to clear the grade. A gate positioned close to a structure needs enough clearance to open fully without hitting a wall, step, or AC unit.

Double gates — two panels that meet in the center — work well for wider openings like equipment access. They require a drop rod anchored in the ground to hold both panels stable when closed. Skipping the drop rod is a common shortcut that causes problems quickly.

Hardware Is Worth the Small Extra Cost

Quality hinges and a solid latch outlast cheap hardware by years. Stainless steel or powder coated hardware resists rust far better than standard zinc plated hardware in an Ohio climate where the gate gets wet through most of the year. A gate that's built correctly and hung with quality hardware should function without adjustment for a long time.
